Introduction to Song Spotlight: I Know You Love Me, But Do You Think of Me Romantically? – Charles

In this short ‘Song Spotlight’ format, I’ll explore a song that I’ve been enjoying by reviewing it and introducing you to other songs with similar vibes.

Today’s spotlight is reserved for the song that inspired me to start this blog. You’ve read my post title so you already know what it is: the introspectively named bedroom pop tune ‘I Know You Love Me But Do You Think of Me Romantically’ by Los Angeles-based artist Charles (a stage name for the ultra-talented Charlotte Ercoli).

Instrumentals

The song has a calm and dreamy vibe. Charles’ beautifully smooth vocals softly traverse alongside acoustic guitars and immersive hyperpop-style synthesizers. There is a hypnotising quality to it. This song, and in fact the entire album it comes from (‘Let’s Start a Family Tonight’) perfectly matches a laid-back stoner energy; pensive and reflective rather than fully melancholic. It’s well-suited to be blared during hazy nights in dim, smoky college dorms. It also fits the bill for the kind of song you might listen to while staring out the window on a solo journey.

Lyrics

The instrumentals drew me in, but the lyrics are a fascinating yet subtle component of this work. Vocals kick in immediately: “Jungle boogie, baby, come on, get in my gold Avalon. Driving through a purple fog of paradise where nothing’s wrong.” The dramatic opening line lays the groundwork for a song that has a lot to say but doesn’t take itself too seriously. For me, the psychedelic, late-night drive imagery evokes strong feelings of nostalgia and wonder.

The titular line that reoccurs in the chorus “You love me, but do you think of me romantically?” might sound wacky at first, but I interpret it as describing a complex dynamic between two lovers, reminiscent of the ever-so-famous Gen Z ‘situationship.’ Charles describes wanting the person romantically, in the deepest sense of the word, while acknowledging that they may not even be connected to their own feelings enough to provide that security.

Conclusion

Something special about Charles’ music is that you don’t have to engage with every word to understand the message. This song’s message is one of love fraught with complications, past heartbreak and uncertainty about the future. These are things that we can all relate to at some point in our lives. I’ll be delving into other tracks on this album very soon! :))
